Introduction to AUICK

The Asian Urban Information Center of Kobe (AUICK) is an international cooperation organization, based in Kobe, Japan. It was established in 1989 with the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Kobe City Government, with the purpose of building extensive information and human networks among medium-sized cities in Asia, to assist in the resolution of population and urbanization-related issues. AUICK projects focus on training city officials, providing technical support and disseminating web-based and published information. AUICK also works with the World Health Organization (WHO) Centre for Health Development

AUICK Workshop in Kobe2015 AUICK / WHO Kobe Centre Workshop on Population Ageing
(Kobe City, 2-6 March, 2015)


AUICK will hold a Workshop on Population Ageing and Appropriate Measures with the support of WHO Kobe Centre, in March 2015.

Participants will be senior officials in charge of policies for the care and active participation of older citizens in the AUICK Associate Cities. They will share information and best practices, before making Action Plans to address the challenges faced by their cities, utilizing the World Health Organziation Urban Health Equity Assessment and Response Tool (Urban HEART).

2014 AUICK / WHO Kobe Centre Workshop on Maternal and Child Health Care and Natural Disasters
(Kobe City, 20-24 October, 2014)

AUICK Technical Support in Danang, Vietnam
AUICK held the 2014 Urban HEART Follow-Up Workshop on Maternal and Child Health Care and Natural Disasters from 20 to 24 October, 2014, with the support of WHO Kobe Centre.

The Workshop trained senior officials of the health departments of AUICK Associate City (AAC) governments, who exchanged information on inequities and challenges in maternal and child health care services, and the provision of those services in disaster situations.

Participants each formulated Action Plans to implement in their cities, based on lessons learned from the Workshop.

Kobe City Forum, Japan

To mark the 25th anniversary of AUICK, Kobe City will hold a forum to review projects for international cooperation, on 22 October.

Keynote speakers will include Mr. Alex Ross, Director of the World Health Organization Centre for Health Development, and Dr. Kiyoko Ikegami, former Director of the United Nations Population Fund Tokyo Office.

A panel discussion will follow, on strategies for promoting future collaboration with international organizations.

AUICK Technical Support in Danang, VietnamTechnical Support Project

In partnership with the Nishi-Shimin Hospital and Kobe Nursing College, AUICK periodically dispatches teams of nurses from Kobe City to Danang in Vietnam, to establish a training system for midwives at a new 600-bed maternal and child health care hospital.

Under the three-year Technical Support Project, supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Vietnamese nurses also visit their counterparts in Kobe for Training-of-Trainers (ToT) courses. The fifth of these courses was held for six senior nurses from 8 to 17 July.

Previously, an AUICK Technical Support Project sent teams of firefighters to Surabaya, Indonesia, to help improve emergency rescue service coordination and response.

2014 AUICK  / WHO Kobe Centre Urban HEART Workshop
- Safe Water and Sanitation

AUICK Technical Support in Danang, VietnamAUICK and the WHO Centre for Health Development (Kobe) held the 2014 Urban HEART Workshop on Safe Water and Sanitation, from 27 to 31 January.

The workshop was arranged for officials in charge of water and sanitation services of six cities in Asia to learn strategies for increasing service provision to poorer populations.

After sharing information on the challenges faced by their cities, participants received training by AUICK and WHO Kobe Centre officials on how to make Action Plans based on the lessons of the Workshop. The plans will be implemented in participants' respective cities, and their progress monitored by AUICK over the coming years.

AUICK Associate Cities represented at the meeting were Chittagong (Bangladesh), Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Surabaya (Indonesia), Olongapo (Philippines), Khon Kaen (Thailand) and Danang (Vietnam).
