Urban Information Center of Kobe
(AUICK) is an international
organization, based in
Japan. It was established in 1989
with the support of the United
Population Fund (UNFPA)
City Government, with the
purpose of building extensive information and human networks
cities in Asia, to assist in the resolution of population
urbanization-related issues. AUICK projects focus
city officials, providing technical support and disseminating web-based
published information. AUICK also works with the World
Organization (WHO) Centre for
UNFPA Seminar in Kobe, Japan

partnership with the Nishi-Shimin Hospital and Kobe Nursing
College, AUICK periodically dispatches teams of nurses from Kobe
City to Danang in Vietnam, to establish a training system for
midwives at a new 600-bed maternal and child health care hospital.
Under the three-year Technical Support Project, supported by the
Japan International Cooperation
Agency (JICA), Vietnamese nurses also visit their counterparts in
Training-of-Trainers (ToT) courses. The fifth of these courses was held
for six senior nurses from 8 to 17 July.

AUICK / WHO Kobe Centre Urban HEART Workshop
- Safe Water and Sanitation
AUICK and the WHO
Centre for Health Development (Kobe) held the 2014 Urban HEART Workshop
on Safe Water and Sanitation, from 27 to 31 January.
The workshop was arranged for officials in charge of
sanitation services of six cities in Asia to learn strategies
increasing service provision to poorer populations.
After sharing information on the challenges faced by their
participants received training by AUICK and WHO Kobe
officials on how to make Action Plans based on the lessons of the
Workshop. The plans will be implemented in
respective cities, and their progress monitored by AUICK over
AUICK Associate Cities represented at the meeting were Chittagong
Penh (Cambodia), Surabaya (Indonesia), Olongapo (Philippines), Khon
Kaen (Thailand) and Danang (Vietnam).

AUICK and the WHO
Organization (WHO) Centre for Health Development (Kobe) jointly held
the 2013 Urban HEART Workshop on the theme of Maternal and Child Health
Care and Natural Disasters from 11-15 March.
At the Meeting, senior
health department officials of the
AUICK Associate Cities (AACs) learned on strategies and programs to
improve health conditions for mothers and children, as well as the
provision of services in times of natural disaster.
WHO Kobe Centre officials trained participants on the Urban HEART
strategy to utilize data for the formulation of plans to address
inequities in service provision.
At the culmination of the meeting, participants made Action Plans based
on lessens learned at the Workshop, as projects to
their cities. These included training care workers and birth
attendants, upgrading maternity facilities and providing reproductive
health education to youths.
Cities represented at the Workshop were Chittagong (Bangladesh), Weihai
Surabaya (Indonesia), Kuantan (Malaysia), Olongapo (Philippines) and
Successful Action Plans for Adolescent Reproductive Health and HIV/AIDS
Bangkok, Thiailand (May, 2012)
UNFPA held the 2012 Good Practice Exchange Meeting in
Bangkok, Thailand on 29-30 May, 2012.
The Meeting was arranged to promote Action Plans implemented in AUICK
Associate Cities (AACs) for improved awareness, education
and care for adolescents and sufferers of HIV/AIDS.*
Participants included senior health department officials
of eight AACs, academic experts, and officials of UNFPA Asia and the
Pacific Regional Office and UNFPA Country Offices.
*AUICK incorporated the Action Plan system into its Workshop Project in
2005 for AAC officials to utilize the lessons learned from training
programs in Kobe. Since 2005, 79 Action Plans have been made under the
system, of which over half are now implemented
programs and policies.
