Achievements 1989 - 2003
Between 1989 and 2003, AUICK
focused
its activities on capacity building, the creation of awareness and
commitment, and knowledge and information sharing among the planners
and administrators of medium-sized cities and towns.
1. Training Programs
1.1. Workshops
Between 1994 and 2003, AUICK held 10 capacity-building workshops on
urban
policy with high level administrative officials from more than 70
cities.
1.2. Seminars
Beginning in 1996, AUICK held 8 seminars until 2003, for chief
administrators
of specific fields, on the following themes:
- Population and Health, Medical Care and
Welfare, 1996
- Population and Environment, 1997
- Population, Primary Health Care and
Reproductive Health,
1998
- Primary Health Care and Reproductive Health,
1999
- Public Utilities in Asian Cities, 2000
- Population and Solid Waste Management, 2001

1.3. Overseas Training
Course
In 1998 AUICK held an overseas training course in Singapore for 7
participants from 7 countries. The topic was ICPD and Health
Care.
1.4. Monitoring and
Follow-up Meetings
Between 1997 and 2003, AUICK staff held frequent meetings with local
administrators in cities throughout Asia to monitor the results of
training programs and to build local linkages.
1.5. Additional
Conferences and Seminars
From time to time over this period, AUICK held international
conferences and special
seminars on relevant topics.
2. Training-support Programs
2.1. Asian Urban
Inquiries
Between 1989 and 2003, AUICK conducted 4 Asian Urban Inquiries. These
projects
were undertaken to find out what administrators perceived as the major
problems facing their cities and the strategies they were using to deal
with these problems.
2.2. In-Depth Studies
Beginning in 1990, AUICK conducted 6 major research projects until 2003.
- 1990-1991. The 1st In-depth Study.
This was a comparative
study of 10 port cities in 5 Asian countries. It was based on the
results of the First Inquiry, and was aimed at understanding
differences in patterns of development and urban problems.
- 1993-1994. The 2nd In-depth Study.
This was based on the
Second Inquiry and reported on population dynamics and urban
infrastructure in 8 Asian countries.
- 1994-1995. The 3rd In-depth Study.
This was carried out in
3 cities in 3 countries to deepen knowledge on the factors and
background of migration and the correlation between migration and
family planning.
- 1997-1998. The 4th In-depth Study.
A study of urban
population dynamics and environments of 6 cities in 6 countries, and
their future prospects and policy proposals through to 2020.
- 1999-2001. The 5th In-depth Study.
A study on reproductive
and primary health care of 3 cities in 3 countries and their future
directions.
- 2003-2004. The 6th In-depth Study.
A study of Asian
urbanisation in the new millennium from 17 Asian countries. It includes
projections for the next 25 years.
2.3. Database and
Website
The AUICK website (http://www.auick.org/)
houses a large amount of information
on population and urbanization that AUICK collected over the 15-year
period from 1989 to 2003. It also includes a searchable database to
allow easy
access to this information.
2.4. Newsletter
From 1989 to 2003, AUICK published 42 issues of the newsletter 'Asian
Cities and People'. Back issues of this newsletter are available on our
website.
