In Brief
The Asian Parliamentarians' Meeting on Population and Development Held in Kobe In order to explore solutions to the population problems in Asia where about 60% of the world population is concentrated, Asian Parliamentarians took part in "The 13th Asian Parliamentarians' Meeting on Population and Development", held in Kobe on 17-18 March. The Meeting was organized by Asian Population and Development Association (APDA) in collaboration with the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD). Since 1985 the International Parliamentarian Meeting has been held yearly and this year's theme was "Population and Water Resources". In order to support the aim of the Meeting, AUICK invited the meeting to be held Kobe. About 80 parliamentarians and scholars from 13 Asian countries participated the Meeting. At the opening session, Mr. Kazutoshi Sasayama, president of AUICK and the Mayor of Kobe City, made a speech and noted, "Historically speaking, Kobe has served as an international port city and therefore, enjoyed a close relationship with Asian countries... We will continue making efforts to build a system to promote collaboration between Asian cities and Kobe at the municipal government level." During the two-day meeting, based on its theme, "Population and Water Resources", the participants actively exchanged opinions and presented research on the views of environment, agriculture and public health. After the Meeting, participants visited The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Reconstruction Promotion Center, Phoenix Plaza, and some restoration sites in Kobe. |
