AUICK is conducting the Fourth In-depth Study on "Urban Population Environment Dynamics" in six medium-sized Asian cities; Surabaya (Indonesia), Faisalabad (Pakistan), Cebu (Philippines), Pusan (South Korea), Khon Kaen (Thailand) and Kobe (Japan) in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) since November 1997. The main objective of the study is to improve understanding of urban population-environment dynamics and knowledge of how population change affects and is affected by environment. Each study team, composed of National and Local Study Directors, a sociologist and an urban administrator, collected data for the period of 1970-1995 in each city, analyzed them and projected future trends based on the data by using modeling technique, called STELLA. On November 9-10, Study Directors from six cities met in Kobe to give a presentation of their final reports. The meeting, chaired by Dr. Gayl D. Ness from the University of Michigan, Principal Investigator for the study project, finished successfully with satisfactory results and fruitful discussions. The outcome of the study is to be published in 1999. Following the meeting, Dr. Richard Rockwell, Senior Research Scientist, Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan, gave a lecture titled "Cities and the Planet: Local and Remote Environmental Effects of Large Cities". The transcript of his lecture will appear in the next issue of this newsletter (No.34). Participants'
