AUICK Committee Meeting

International Advisory Committee

Annual Meeting on 4 Ocotber, 2009

On behalf of his colleagues, Dr. Hirofumi Ando, President of AUICK, welcomed the International Advisory Committee (IAC) Members to the meeting, and the Chair, Dr. Gayl D. Ness, expressed appreciation to Dr. Haryono Suyono for his active dissemination of the lessons of AUICK. Mr. Toshihiko Ono, Executive Director of AUICK, explained the activities and achievements of the AUICK Program in 2009, and the planned activities of the AUICK Program for 2010-11. The IAC Members gave a number of proposals toward the continued improvement of the AUICK Program:

- The MIS established in Surabaya has provided and utilized population based data more applicable to improved planning. The Project is supported by DAMANDIRI, an Indonesian NGO set up in 1996 to improve quality of life beyond Indonesia’s successful family planning programs. The Chair recommended that such activities should be promoted in all AACs, and a suggestion was made that MIS progress be reported with Action Plan progress. As 2010 is the year for national Census in many countries, the Members also recommended promotion of the timely utilization of this data.

- To strengthen ties among AUICK and UNFPA, IAC Members suggested that Senior UNFPA Country staff be invited to participate in AUICK Monitoring visits.

- AUICK should continuously provide information on its activities to UNFPA Country Offices, to ascertain the most effective ways for UNFPA to assist AUICK Program implementation.

- Workshops should take a preventive approach, while also addressing relevant emerging issues. AUICK would consider conducting an inquiry on the population and development issues and challenges currently faced by AACs, as a basis for future AUICK activities.

- AUICK should continue nine-city as well as second-stage Workshops for AAC participants with local academic experts.

- It was recommended that AUICK look for outside organizations, or other United Nations Agencies, to provide support for the Workshop Project, as well as a channel for the expansion of the Program.
