A. History

Because much of what was done and learned flowed sequentially, with experience guiding next steps throughout the process, this report will begin with a history of AUICK's life and work. How was it started? Where did the vision come from? What was actually done? How was the Center structured, and what were its major activities? Finally, what was learned along the way? These questions will be answered as we review the historical process. We can identify nine steps in this historical process, as follows:

A. 1985: Prologue 1. Comparative study of Kobe, Singapore and Tomakomai

B. 1987: Prologue 2. Kobe's Asian Conference on Population and Development in Medium-Sized Cities

C. 1989: Inauguration of the Asian Urban Information Center of Kobe

D. 1990: First round survey of Asian Urban Administrators

E. 1991: First in-depth study: Population and Development in Ten Asian port cities

F. 1992-3: Second round survey of Asian Urban Administrators

G. 1994: Second in-depth study: Population Dynamics and Urban Infrastructure

H. 1994: Creation of the Kobe International Cooperation Center

I. 1995: Third round survey of Asian Urban Administrators

J. 1996: Third in-depth study

K. 1996-7: Fourth round survey of Asian Urban Administrators

The History chapter will have four main sections. The first will deal with the two prologue activities and the formation of AUICK. The second will review the three Inquiries. The third will review the three in-depth studies that have been done, and the fourth and final section will deal with the training activities of the AUICK.
