2. AUICK Associate Cities

AUICK should enter into a longer term relationship with a series of cities in Asia. These can be designated AUICK Associate Cities. The following is a suggested list of candidate cities for such a long term relationship

  • Pusan, South Korea
  • Tianjin, China
  • Cebu/Olongapo, Philippines
  • Surabaya, Indonesia
  • Haiphong, Vietnam
  • Khon kaen, Thailand
  • Georgetown/Port Klang, Malaysia
  • Singapore
  • Chittagong, Bangladesh
  • Madras, India
  • Hyderabad/Faisalabad, Pakistan
AUICK can work with these cities to plan in-depth, and a long term process of training as part of the Special Topic courses, which will help to link research and training more closely. AUICK can also seek additional in-country resources from such groups as UNFPA country offices to assist in its information gathering and training.

The secretariat can develop formal relations with selected cities. In each case a local university can be asked to work with an urban administrator, preferably in a planning agency. These two could be co-Project Leaders. AUICK can assist in seeking funds for a three year period from the local UNFPA representative, and IAC members will assist in identifying cities and persons in each city who will act as the Project Leaders.

Future in-depth studies can focus on these Associate Cities, and trainees for the Kobe specific training courses can also be selected from these cities. This will help to build a cadre of Kobe-trained administrators, who can work together in the city, and it will also help to integrate research and information gathering with training.

The following is a proposed schedule for research and training activities. It shows how results of in-depth studies of one year can be fed into the Special Topics training course in the following year.
