November 1997
Since its establishment in 1989, with the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the City of Kobe, the Asian Urban Information Center of Kobe (AUICK) has undertaken various projects centering on surveys and research of urban issues which confront Asian nations, as well as numerous training programs. This report is a product of the Third In-depth Study which was conducted with the goal of identifying the factors and background behind migration and grasping the prevalence of family planning and people's perceptions of social services in medium-sized Asian cities. Also, the study attempted to identify the actual correlation between migration and family planning. The data for the study were obtained through sampling surveys in three cities; Surabaya (Indonesia), Changchun (China) and Cebu (the Philippines). Given the importance of collecting statistical data on these issues in the regions, there is no doubt that the publication of this report is of great significance. We hope this report will instill a deeper public interest in the matters and subsequently contribute to solving the important issues confronting Asian cities. We are grateful to the three specialists who administered the survey; Dr. Prijono Tjiptoherijanto, Assistant to the State Minister for Population (Indonesia); Dr. Wang Sheng Jin, Director of the Population Research Institute, Jilin University (China); and Dr. Wilhelm Flieger, the Office of Population Studies, University of San Carlos (the Philippines). We are also thankful to Dr. Toshio Kuroda, Director Emeritus of the Population Research Institute, Nihon University (Japan) for his invaluable guidance. Lastly, we would like to express our most sincere gratitude for the strong support of this project rendered by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Kazutoshi Sasayama
