Workshop on Population and Sustainable Development 2000
(The Seventh Group Training
Course on Integrated Urban Policy 2000)
BACKGROUND
Asian
Urban Information Center of Kobe (AUICK), with the support of the
United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Kobe City Government,
held the 2000 Workshop on Population and Sustainable Development from
16 May to 3 June 2000.
AIM
The
workshop is designed for administrators in Asian cities with a
population of 100,000 to 4,000,000 to share their experiences,
knowledge and know-how with each other. This course is intended to
develop a better understanding of a wide range of issues caused by
population change and provide clues on what to do for sustainable
development. It is also aimed at promoting the cooperation among the
cities in Asia on a continual basis.

REVIEW
The
workshop covered
broad areas such as local administration system, statistics,
population, family planning, public health, environment, and waste
disposal. 12 senior urban administrators participated in the workshop
from Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines,
Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam and Korea.
All the
participants
made a presentation on their administration, finance, and personnel in
the respective cities, to share their experience, knowledge and issues.
Lectures were given on administration system of Japan, including policy
planning, statistics system, and role of ward offices as well as
population policies and ICPD goals. Following this, observation visits
of facilities such as the public health center and garbage incineration
plant supplemented the lectures and gave the participants a firsthand
information of Kobe City's urban management.
