Visit to AUICK Associate Cities
An AUICK
delegation, comprised of Dr. Hirofumi Ando,
President, Mr. Manabu
Shinya, Executive Director, and Mr. Nobuyuki
Morimoto, Deputy Executive
Director, undertook monitoring visits to Malaysia and India from 24
June to 3 July, 2007.

Visit
to UNFPA Malaysia Office
At
the office of UNFPA in Malaysia on
25 June, the delegation met with Dr. Richard Leete,
Representative of
the office, and Assistant Representative, Ms. Yeoh Yeok Kim,
to discuss
AUICK’s ongoing activities in Malaysia, through its workshops
and monitoring. The delegation expressed appreciation for UNFPA
Malaysia’s assistance in screening prospective AUICK workshop
participants.

Visit to Kuantan Municipal Council
The delegation then visited Kuantan
City in Malaysia from 25 to 28 June 2007. They met firstly
with Dato’ Azizan bin
Ahmad, President of the Kuantan Municipal Council, to
convey their gratitude for the Municipality’s ongoing
collaboration and support for AUICK.

Alias bin Mohd. Salleh,
Kuantan’s
participants of AUICK workshops since 2005 gathered to discuss the
AUICK program, and report on the progress of their Action Plans
formulated at AUICK workshops and implemented in Kuantan.
Mr.
Mohamad Zainudin Idris, Director
of the
Health and Cleanliness
Control Department of Kuantan Municipal Council was a participant of
the First 2005 AUICK workshop. He presented the success of his strategy
to provide reproductive health and HIV/ AIDS awareness to youths.
Through the setting up NGOs and allocating facilities to provide peer
and group education, over 500 students in Kuantan have become involved.
Mr.
Saudi Lakim,
Headmaster of St. Thomas
Primary School, District Education of Kuantan, State Education,
participated in
AUICK’s 2005 Second Workshop. He presented the success of his
plan to increase school enrolment to 100%, by ensuring the provision of
necessary learning aids, improving the curriculum and the learning
environment.
Kuantan’s
participant of the Second 2006 Workshop was Mr.
Nazruddin bin Ismail, Director of the Urban Services and
Environment
Department of Kuantan Municipal Council. His Action Plan was to carry
out solid waste recycling and encourage the community through a poster
campaign and provision of appropriate waste disposal containers.
2007’s
First Workshop participant was Mr. Zaidi
Shahor, Unit
Operation Manager of the Operation and Maintenance Department, Indah
Water Konsortium. He outlined the development plans for a new sewage
treatment plant in the city, which was to be built upon the acquisition
of the land.
The participants then accompanied the
delegation on visits to sites
related to the Action Plan implementation, a waste management and
recycling center, and a sewage treatment plant operated by the Indah
Water Konsortium.

Visit to Chennai, India
The AUICK delegation visited Chennai
City in India from 28 June to 1 July 2007, accompanied by Ms.
Shachi
Grover, Program coordinator of the UNFPA India Office.
The delegation met Mr. Rajesh Lakhoni, I.A.S., the
Commissioner of the
Corporation of Chennai, on 28 June. They discussed AUICK’s
collaborative relationship with the Corporation of Chennai, as well as
policy implementation in the city.
Following
this, the delegation met Mr.
Pieter Bult, the coordinator of the UN Team for Recovery
Support in the
region that was struck by the Tsunami caused by the Sumatra earthquake
in 2004.
On 29 June, meetings were held with
with participants who attended
AUICK’s workshops since 2005 from Chennai.
Dr.
K. Manivasan,
the Joint Commissioner
(Health) and Project Director
of the Health and District Family Welfare Bureau, Chennai Corporation,
presented the progress of his Action Plan formulated at the 2005 First
AUICK Workshop on Adolescent Reproductive Health and HIV/ AIDS. The
plan incorporated reproductive health care training for medical
workers, as well as HIV/AIDS awareness and education campaigns.
Mr.
Shiv Das Meena, who had participated in
AUICK’s Second
2005 Workshop on primary education as Joint Commissioner (Education),
Revenue and Finance of Chennai Corporation, explained the difficulties
in implementing his Action Plan, as he was transferred to another
department. His replacement as Joint Commissioner working in the
education department of Chennai Corporation, Ms. Usha Kakarla,
explained details of primary education strategies in the city.
Regretfully, Ms. Shatha
Kumari Paranthaman,
District Family Welfare
Medical Officer, District Family Welfare Bureau, Corporation of
Chennai, who attended AUICK’s Second 2006 Workshop on
Population Ageing, was unable to present the progress of her Action
Plan to the delegation due to her retirement on the day.
The
Chennai participant of
2007’s first workshop, Mr.
Thirugnanasambandam Chandrasekar, who is the Superintending
Engineer
(i/c), of Solid Waste Management, Corporation of Chennai, was not able
to present the progress of his Action Plan as he is not in charge of
wastewater management. Instead, he took the delegation to waste
management sites related to the Action Plan which Mr. V.R.
Gurumurthy
developed at the First 2006 Workshop on Population and Envioronmental
Protection in Urban Planning. Mr. Gurumurthy passed away in March 2007.
The plan aims to improve waste segregation and compactor vehicles, as
well as develop sanitary landfills in the city.

Surabaya Seminar on Empowerment of the Elderly
Upon the invitation of Drs
Bambang Dwi Hartono, Mayor of Surabaya City, over 400
participants attended
the
National Seminar on Community-based Empowerment of the Elderly on 11
June 2007. Dr. Hirofumi Ando (pictured) represented
AUICK as its
President at the seminar, organized by the City of Surabaya, Airlangga
University and Dr. Haryono Suyono,
Chairman of the
Indonesian National
Committee on Social Welfare (DNIKS). As a follow-through event of
AUICK’s Second 2006 Workshop on Population Ageing and
Appropriate Measures for the Aged, the seminar aimed to highlight the
development of community-based empowerment of the elderly, to encourage
their active and significant roles in society, especially at a time
when governments are being faced with the challenge of vastly changing
population structures and increasing numbers of elderly citizens. »»More
